VCU take down the Lady Bison is a 3 point thriller.
The Lady Bison entered their matchup against VCU riding a four-game winning streak, but this game presents a notably different offensive challenge. Despite their struggles from the field — shooting just 25.8% at the start of the second half — the Lady Bison maintain the same tenacious defensive effort that has fueled their recent success.
At halftime, the score stood at 34-25 in favor of VCU. Rayne Durant continues to be a key offensive presence, contributing 8 points and posing a consistent threat in the low post. However, the Lady Bison offense has shown signs of hesitation, even though they're taking quality shots.
VCU’s quick-trigger offense is creating some difficulties for the Lady Bison defensively, forcing faster decisions and putting pressure on the defense to stay disciplined. Maintaining their defensive intensity while finding a more confident rhythm on offense will be critical if the Lady Bison want to extend their streak. In the third quarter, the Bison made a very good adjustment and went on a run, cutting the deficit to just 2 points by the media timeout with 4:51 remaining in the period. Their improved defense and more efficient offense helped shift the momentum in their favor, setting the stage for a competitive second half. After a hard-fought third quarter, the Lady Bison found themselves trailing by four going into the final period. Determined to close the gap, they came out strong in the fourth, with Zennia Thomas leading the charge. Thomas battled relentlessly, hitting crucial shots and driving the offense to keep her team within striking distance. However, VCU responded with a quick trigger from beyond the arc, maintaining their edge with consistent three-point shooting. Despite the Lady Bison's efforts and momentum in the fourth, VCU’s sharpshooting helped them hold on for the victory. The VCU Rams secured a narrow victory, winning the game by three points. Although there were moments when the officiating could have been better, the Lady Bison managed 25-for-37 shooting, indicating the referees largely handled the game well. The Lady Bison struggled from beyond the arc, going 3-for-10 on three-pointers, and shot 19-for-58 overall, shooting just 32.8% from the field.
The game was tightly contested, tied five times throughout. However, the Rams responded with strong free throw shooting, converting 9 of 13 attempts. They were also more effective from three-point range, sinking 10 of 34 attempts, and shot 25-for-63 from the field overall.
Both teams showcased strong defensive efforts, but the VCU Rams' ability to capitalize at the free throw line and maintain composure during key moments ultimately led to their win at home against the Lady Bison.
My personal perspective: The Bison played a hard-fought game, showcasing moments of strong defense and effort. Their offense struggled at times, with shots not falling as they hoped. While VCU appeared to have the advantage, Howard ultimately fell short due to some self-inflicted mistakes. Despite the loss, the Lady Bison demonstrated heart and skill throughout the contest. This team is different—they possess the determination and ability to improve, and they’re ready to bounce back stronger in their upcoming games.
